On the 60th anniversary of Malta’s Independence, veteran journalist Michael Caruana has put together a new collection of the work and legacy of former Prime Minister Ġorġ Borg Olivier.
Based on the experiences of those who lived and worked closely with the former PN leader, the book “Ġorġ Borġ Olivier – il-Bniedem, il-Politiku, il-Missier ta’ Malta Indipendenti” sheds new light on significant chapters in Malta’s history, including the issue of Malta’s integration with the UK and the road to independence.
During the book launch at the President’s Palace in San Anton, the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono said that even as a child Ġorġ Borg Olivier used to inspire her for his wisdom, caution and the ability to wait until the right moment to make important decisions.
She said she considers herself a Republican and has always wanted to see Malta as a Republic. Although she was an activist in the Labour Party for a long time she believes that if Ġorġ Borg Olivier had not brought about Independence, Malta would not have been able to become a Republic.
She said that 60 years after Independence, the Maltese nation has more prospects and wide-ranging opportunities thanks to the trust in the people who were able to lead for themselves without being colonised.
The President of Malta said that Ġorġ Borg Olivier showed the same confidence in the Maltese people when he worked so hard to ensure the country would become sovereign and independent.
The Deputy leader of the PN Alex Perici Calascione urged the country to recognise how to mould, train, support and encourage people towards political life who can follow the example of service, loyalty, correctness and integrity which was shown by Borg Olivier; an example which becomes more relevant as time goes by.
During the launch of this book, other people also spoke about their personal experiences with Ġorġ Borg Olivier, including Judge Toni Abela, Prof Tonio Borg and Dr Alexander Borg Olivier, the son of Ġorġ Borg Olivier.
